Marriage Licenses Application

A marriage license is a mandatory legal document that authorizes you to get married in Ontario. In Oshawa, you can obtain one from Service Oshawa at City Hall. It costs $150 and remains valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

Requirements to Apply

To secure your license, ensure you meet the following baseline requirements: City of Oshawa

  • Age: You must be at least 16 years old. If you are 16 or 17, written parental consent is required.

  • Identification: Each applicant must present two pieces of original government-issued ID (e.g., birth certificate, current passport, driver's license). One piece must include a photo.

  • Marital History: If previously divorced, you must provide official divorce documentation (e.g., an original or court-certified copy of your Certificate of Divorce or Decree Absolute).

How to Apply

  • Apply Online: Fill out the Ontario Marriage Licence Application online to generate an application number.

  • Sign: Both parties must print and sign the completed application form in original ink.

  • Visit a Municipality: Book an in-person appointment or visit your local municipal office (such as Oshawa City Hall) with your signed application and IDs.

Next Steps

Once you have the physical license, it can be used anywhere in the province. You will then need to hire a registered marriage officiant to perform the ceremony, which must take place within your 90-day window. Following the ceremony, your officiant will register the marriage, and you can apply for a formal Marriage Certificate through ServiceOntario a few weeks later.
